HUNGER OR APPETITE

Many Christians often say “I am hungry for God!”  Is our hunger for God prevalent only when we hear the preacher on Sunday or during worship?  Hunger is the cry to your real need while appetite is a trained behavior.  But what is our appetite really like?
Our appetites dictate our hunger…what we feast upon is what we begin to produce an appetite for.  Even though we have a real need to be closer to the Father and to commune with the Lord daily, our appetites take us to other things.  We create an appetite based on things that are formed through environment, surroundings, and exposure. I used to dislike green salads until my doctor advised me to maintain a healthy lifestyle, now I have acquired a taste for them and could eat them every day.  Although it’s still tempting to ignore those green salads when standing in front of a pizza buffet or an all you can eat meat smorgasbord.  Appetite can take precedence over true hunger!

Matthew 5:6  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Psalm 63:1  (A psalm of David when he was in the Desert of Judah)  O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Why are our appetites out of control?  Here in America we fulfill our appetite with pleasures while suppressing true hunger.  What we don’t realize is that we are training ourselves that our flesh is in control and the lust (or the appetite(s) of the flesh) can control our day. I’m not talking about what you eat for dinner…but a condition of our appetites (desires) not fulfilling our real hunger!

When we correct our appetite to match what we really need…we will no longer see a deficiency in our churches and in our homes but we will see an outpouring. The Lord will fill our hearts in response to a true hunger for righteousness.  Let’s cut out the appetite for things that lead nowhere and fulfill the hunger we all have by seeking a new lifestyle of seeking him!
